Extracurricular Activities for Understanding Different Values

Celebrating our differences and feeling the diversity

Students start their school lives, realizing the diversity in this school. We emphasize the importance of, not being the same with others, but accepting differences and being connected with and supportive to one another. And we have activities for students to achieve that value. We accept students entering even in the midterm, whether they are from Japanese high schools or from overseas. Our welcoming atmosphere and efficient system enable the transfer students to start their school lives smoothly. Our students can join YMCA programs spreading out 130 countries connected by YMCA networks, for example, Hong Kong Study Tour, Canada Study Camp, Denmark School Trip and so on.

School activities on students’ initiative

The exposure to different ways of thinking and acting through school activities allow students to learn to accept the differences among themselves, and simultaneously realize that each of them is the precious constituent of the diversity. Students are encouraged to be open and understanding to others and learn how to express themselves properly through school activities. School events such as Model United Nations and Speech Contest as well as debates and presentations during daily lessons are the examples of many opportunities provided for students to express their opinions. IHS believes such opportunities allow students to demonstrate autonomy and prosper in school.“Everyone can be a hero”. There are various chances “to be a hero” for everyone here. To prove it, students organize committees themselves to plan and manage some of the school events. The committee members gather from every grade to work together for extracurricular activities (School Festival, Commencement, Welcome Party, Sports Day etc). They cooperate well and do everything by themselves including the review of their work. It’s no wonder that our school activities are creative and reflective of students’ opinions and thus they enhance other students’ morale.

Did you change after learning in IHS?

  • I used to be reluctant to say my opinions for fear of objecting to others, but I am not afraid of that anymore.

  • I became proactive and curious about many things.

  • Teachers and friends in IHS accept who I am and I also learn to accept those from different backgrounds with different ways of thinking. That experience broadens my view.

  • It is a small school. Everyone here is so unique that I learn to tolerate the differences among us.
